What's the difference between full face motorcycle helmets and modular motorcycle helmets? A standard full face helmet has a chin bar that is fixed, and modular helmets have a chin bar on a hinge so that it can be flipped up. Riders like these for their convenience in situations like paying tolls at toll booths or operating gas pumps. To raise the front part of most modular helmets, you press a button on the side of the helmet to unlock it. It remains in the "up" position until you flip it back down and lock it in place. Though you will sometimes see riders riding with the chin bar flipped up, they're not supposed to wear them that way. They are supposed to remain in their closed position when moving. With many modular helmets, you have the option of just flipping up the shield and not the entire front of the helmet.
The desire for modular versus standard full face helmets is down to personal preference. Full face helmets tend to be quieter and lighter weight. For those who complain about the noise with modular helmets, there are plenty of people who appreciate the bit of extra ventilation and don't mind the noise. But some riders like the convenience of the modular helmet. Riders who wear glasses underneath their helmet often find modular helmets to be easier because they can put the helmet on, flip up the chin bar, put on glasses, and flip the chin bar back down rather than putting on glasses and having to maneuver a full face helmet over them.
While many modular helmets meet DOT approval standards, few of them pass the ECE 22-05 standards, and none meet Snell standards, so riders should consider the importance of the various safety standards before choosing. There are as yet no studies comparing the difference in safety between open face, modular, and full face helmets. The real test for most riders is trying them on. A full face helmet that you don't wear is obviously more dangerous than a modular helmet that you wear faithfully. Good fit is vital no matter which kind of helmet you choose.
